Pine shipping crate from Watertown Arsenal for 12-pdr solid shot with portion of lid. Constructed of 1” boards and features dovetailed joints which is typical of early war construction. This crate was originally used to ship artillery shells and later reused to hold Remington revolvers. Majority of crate still shows the original olive green paint. Original stenciling on underside of lid reads: “WATERTOWN ARSN” and “JULY 1862” in black paint. Original white stenciling on one side of box reads: “8 ROUNDS / 12 PDR / SOLID SHOT”. On this same end, stenciled in black over the original white markings is: “REMINGTONS / ARMY REVOLVER / CAL 44”. Opposite end repainted battleship gray. Overall the wood has minor chips on corners and edges and there are scrapes in the paint as you would expect to find on any “shipping crate.” Both handles are still present. The bottom has a 0.25” crack running the entire length of the box but is still solidly attached to the box. 13”w x 22”l x 11.5”h. [jet]
Extra shipping charges may be necessary.
