US/CS ARTILLERY VENT PICK

This iron vent pick is a tool used by Civil War artillerymen. It was inserted through the vent hole of the cannon in order to pierce the cartridge bag seated in the bore. This allowed the flame from the primer to reach the propellant charge. Accompanying tag which has separated from its string reads, “U.S. CIVIL WAR ARTILLERY GUNNERS VENT PICK. FRANCIS BANNERMAN CO. N.Y.C. STOCK”.

Measures 17” length overall and 2 ¼” diameter at the handle. Surface shows a darkened patina with bright areas.  [sl]
