$200,000.00

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 455-09

This foundry was named for the famous iron works at Tredegar, Wales; the Tredegar Iron Works opened in 1837 and was active in the foundry trade for many years in Richmond until 1952. In 1841 Joseph Anderson became involved with the Tredegar foundry and purchased the company in 1854 from shareholders. Anderson made Tredegar Iron Company one of the largest and best equipped foundries in the United States. By 1861/65 Tredegar was operating at full capacity, producing more than 1,000 cannons for the Confederacy as well as other material needed for the Southern war effort.

This 12 Pounder Iron Howitzer tube was manufactured in 1862 as stamped on the left trunnion. The right trunnion is marked, “JRATG TF”. Muzzle number “1507”. Stamped “850” at breech. Between November 1861 and June 1862 Tredegar produced at least 30 Iron Field Howitzers, only 14 are known to have survived. Due to bursting 12 pounder Iron Howitzers, General Lee along with Col. Gorgas issued orders in late 1862 to terminate the manufacture of 12 pounder Field Howitzers.

This 12 Pounder Field Howitzer is in very fine condition with sharp markings. The carriage is a full-scale reproduction, also in excellent condition, garage kept. No auction records for a wartime tube are known. Last known private sale was in Atlanta several years ago. The Horse Soldier is pleased to offer this 12 Pounder Field Howitzer at $200,000.00.

To view the cannon special arrangements must be made prior to visiting our shop. Stored off site!   [ws]
