This 24-pounder iron Flank Howitzer is one of 50 made during the American Civil War by Cyrus Alger, an arms manufacturer and inventor located in Boston. Markings are visible; “No. 1486”, the foundry number, is found on the rim base just above the right trunnion. Muzzle is marked “C. A. & Co.” (Cyrus Alger & Co., Boston), “1486”, weight of tube, “1863”, “T.J.R.” (inspector Thomas Jackson Rodman), and “No. 306” (registry number), unrecorded (new find), added to the National Cannon Registry. There is also a large “U.S.” on top of the tube near the breech. This tube, manufactured in 1863, was part of the first shipment of ten tubes delivered to the US Government.

Untouched condition, would easily clean to a nice smooth finish.

Special viewing arrangements are needed, tube is off site. Special shipping arrangements necessary. [ws]
