Prepared by a Board of Artillery Officers. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC.,1863. Penciled owner inscription, front eps: “W. Chandler/ Co. “E” 1st ILLs Lt. Artillery.” MOLLUS ex-library copy; Chicago MOLLUS Commandery presentation sticker, front eps , from “Mrs. A. L. Spaulding Jr”, dated “Aug. 1905.” 229pp., 88 plates. Brown blind-stamped buckram, measuring 7.75 x 5.25., with  “U.S. Govt. / Library” stamped at foot of spine, and gilt title lettering at the head. Covers near pristine, with slight chipping at head and foot. Tight spine, clean text.

William Chandler was a native Chicagoan who was commissioned 2nd Lieut., and mustered into “Battery E” Co., Illinois Light Artillery on 12/19/1861. He was promoted to 1st Lieut. 2/25/1863, and was mustered out on 12/29/1864. His artillery battery [known as “Waterhouse’s”] was organized in Chicago in December 1861, and served exclusively in the western theater, participating in the battle of Shiloh and the Sieges of Vicksburg and Jackson, MS. It mustered out July 15, 1865. During service it lost five men killed and mortally wounded and twenty five by disease for a total of thirty. In excellent condition, a regulation Artillery text, ID’D to an officer of a Chicago Artillery unit, from a Chicago Mollus library. An excellent Chicago Civil War collectible.
