Edited by Allan Nevins. Published by The MacMillan Company, New York, 1952. Four volumes. 1st edition. 365, 517, 642, 603 pp., ills. Exhibits light wear at the extremities. Else VG plus.

One of the best diaries from the Civil War era, written a well-connected New York attorney who served with the U.S. Sanitary Commission, and who met and knew most of the prominent figures of the time, including Lincoln and Grant. Highly insightful narrative of four decades of New York City history, with the third volume being of special interest. [Strong also writes with flair, peppering his narrative with a number of highly quotable descriptions. For example, on General Phil Sheridan: “The General is a stumpy, quadrangular little man, with a forehead of no promise and hair so short that it looks like a coat of black paint.…”].

Superb addition to any Civil War library.
