By Beverly Tucker, of Virginia. “Secretly Printed in Washington [in the year 1836] by Duff Green, for Circulation in the Southern States. But Afterwards Suppressed.” Reprint of the 1836 edition. Published by Rudd & Carleton, New York, 1861. Front EPS owner inscription: Emma Delafield / July 1861. 392 pp. Brown blind-sided buckram, 7.75 x 5.5”, with gilt spine lettering. Exhibits the slightest of wear, else fine-plus. This controversial novel was written in 1836 by William & Mary College professor Beverly tucker under the pseudonym “Edward William Sidney”. Written in the wake of the Jackson-era nullification crisis, its intent was to kindle southern flames for eventual secession. The reprint edition was published in the north in 1861 for the opposite reason….to inform Union readers of southern of southern designs long in the making. A provocative 1830s novel predictive of the Civil War future ahead. Fine collectible.
