This testament is a little larger than the pocket version but could still easily be carried in a haversack or knapsack. The book meas. approx. 4.25 x 6.25 and has very nice tooled leather covers with scrollwork decorations with “NOUVEAU TESTAMENT” stamped in gold on the spine. The hinges of the front and back covers show moderate wear as does the spine but all are still firmly in place.

The interior of the book is in excellent readable condition. Pages have darkened some from age but are otherwise very good. There is also some light foxing scattered throughout.

Just inside the front cover is a period pencil inscription in two lines that reads “C. S. WATSON / APR. 2nd 1862.”

Clement S. Watson enlisted in Company B, 25th Louisiana Infantry on March 11, 1862 and was elected 2nd Lieutenant 3 days later. The regiment served in the Western Theater and saw action at Shiloh for which Lt. Watson was present. In July of 1862 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and he remained with his company till November of that year when he became ill and went on furlough till February of 1863. While absent Watson was promoted to Captain on December 31, 1862. The following May he was assigned to Court Martial Duty but returned to his Company in July and was with them through August.

In September of 1863 he was assigned as Camp Director at Chickamauga Station where he remained until December when he was sent on detached service to Louisiana. Captain Watson remained on this service till August of 1864 and rejoined his regiment on September 1, 1864. He was present with his regiment till the end of the war being engaged at Jonesboro, Nashville and Spanish Fort.
