SINGLE VOLUME 1863 TACTICS MANUAL

$150.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 408-89

Green hard covered manual with an embossed eagle on the both covers. In gold on the spine is “(BY AUTHORITY OF THE WAR DEPARTMENT MAY 1863) U.S. INFANTRY & RIFLE TACTICS” The bottom of the spine has a spread-winged eagle on a US shield.

The volume runs approx. 450 pages with advertisements for other books on the back few pages. The manual covers the School of the Soldier, the School of the Company and the School of the Battalion. There are numerous illustrations and fold-out plates all of which are present and complete. Interior has some light staining on a few pages but is mostly clean. Binding is excellent.

There is some period doodling on the inside front cover that looks to be some child’s writing exercise and the back of the first fold out plate has a faint inscription. It looks to read “WM. H. TEMPLETON / HONEY BROOK / CHESTER / CO. / PA. / JUNE 2ND 1863.” Census records from 1870 show a William H. Templeton born in 1846 and living in Philadelphia which is next to Chester County. There is no record of Mr. Templeton serving in the Civil War.
