This book was printed in Richmond, Virginia as the official regulations for the Confederate Army. It has a forward written by the CS Secretary of War, George W. Randolph that reads, “WAR DEPARTMENT, RICHMOND, NOVEMBER 1ST, 1862. THE FOLLOWING REGULATIONS FOR THE ARMY OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES ARE PUBLISHED BY DIRECTION OF THE PRESIDENT, FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF ALL CONCERNED. THEY WILL ACCORDINGLY BE STRICTLY OBEYED, AND NOTHING CONTRARY TO THEM WILL BE ENJOINED OR PERMITTED IN ANY PORTION OF THE FORCES OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES BY THE OFFICERS THEREOF.”
Included are regulations for clothing, financial accounts, arms, arrests, artillery, baking, bathing, chaplains, cooks, daily duties, discipline, encampment, forage allowance, furniture, guards, horses, hospitals, inspections, laundresses, marches, officers, pay rolls, prisoners of war, servants, sutlers, transportation, plus many more topics. There are sample forms for quartermasters, subsistence department, medical, ordnance department, corps of engineers, and recruiting service. The final segment of the book is the articles of war.
Book measures 7 ¾” x 5 ¼” x 1” and has a brown cloth cover. There is an embossed design on both the front and back covers as well as the spine. Pages have slightly yellowed from age but none are loose. The inside of the front cover is splitting but still intact. The inside of the front cover, as well as the first page, have a name inscribed but it is difficult to decipher the exact spelling and who this gentleman could have been. It reads, “E.R. MILL--, COMPTROLLER’S OFFICE”. Text contains 420 pages.
This is an extremely rare book and a great item to add to a Confederate collection.
