Paper bound book meas. approx. 10.00 x 6.50 inches and runs approx. 72 pages.

Front cover is green with black lettering that reads “ARMY DRUM AND FIFE BOOK CONTAINING FULL INSTRUCTIONS, THE REVEILLE, THE TATTOO, THE VARIOUS CALLS AND BEATS USED IN THE SERVICE, AND A CHOICE COLLECTION OF MUSIC. TO WHICH IS ADDED THE BUGLER’S CALL BOOK, CONTAINING  ALL THE INFANTRY GENERAL CALLS AND CALLS FOR SKIRMISHERS, USED IN THE U.S.ARMY. EDITED BY KEACH, BURDITT, AND CASSIDY” Bottom of cover has publishing information that reads “BOSTON: PUBLISHED BY OLIVER DITSON AND CO., WASHINGTON ST.” Stamped on the bottom edge in black ink is “L.J. WHEELDEN, BANGOR, ME.” Cover is badly chipped along narrow end with a small chip out of the top edge also.

The paper inside the book has darkened along the edges with age. Lower right corners of first several pages are chipped or dog-eared.

The section on the drum has instructions on how to play and then gives music for different camp calls such as “To the Colors,” “The General,” “The Assembly” etc… It then provides different music for various songs such as “Yankee Doodle,” “Road to Boston,” “The Dead March,” “The Hessian” etc.. The very back of the book has bugle calls to include “Attention,” “The Charge” plus numerous calls for skirmishes.

Back cover of the volume is missing.
