During the Civil War the state of Indiana provided 208, 367 soldiers and 2,130 sailors to the Union cause--of whom 24, 416 were killed and 48, 568 wounded in service. On the army side, the state contributed 129 Infantry units, 13 cavalry, 1 cavalry company, 1 regiment of Heavy Artillery and 26 light artillery batteries. Nearly all of these were posted to the western theatre, though some surfaced in east, with a half dozen present at the Battle of Gettysburg— [3rd Indiana Cavalry, 7th-14th-19th - 20th- and 27th Infantry].

The Horse Soldier takes pleasure in honoring the Hoosier state by offering a selection of Indiana regimental histories, of which this is one; some of the volumes are quite scarce.

A resident of Angola, IN, Marvin B. Butler was mustered as First Sergeant in Co. “A”, 44th Indiana Infantry, 11/22/1861. He was promoted to 2nd Lieut. 9/11/1862, and to 1st Lieut. 11/27/1, but was debilitated by illness and honorably discharged from service, 5/2/1863.

The 44th Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered into service at Ft. Wayne, IN, 11/22/1861. Initially assigned to the Army of the Ohio, the unit was later transferred to the Army of the Tennessee, then to the Army of the Cumberland, first the 21st Corps and then to the 4th, wwith which it served through the end of the war. Battles and Campaign activities: 1862—Battles of Ft.Donelson, Shiloh, Stone’s River. 1863—Stone’s River [Jan.]. 1863—Tullahoma Campaign, Battle of Chickamauga, Chattanooga Campaign, Missionary Ridge. 1865—Provost duty at Chattanooga, TN. Mustered out at Chattanooga, 9/14/1865. During service the 44th Indiana lost 80 men killed and mortally wounded and 229 by disease for a total of 309.   [jp]
