During the Civil War the state of Indiana provided 208, 367 soldiers and 2,130 sailors to the Union cause--of whom 24, 416 were killed and 48, 568 wounded in service. On the army side, the state contributed 129 Infantry units, 13 cavalry, 1 cavalry company, 1 regiment of Heavy Artillery and 26 light artillery batteries. Nearly all of these were posted to the western theatre, though some surfaced in east, with a half dozen present at the Battle of Gettysburg— [3rd Indiana Cavalry, 7th-14th-19th - 20th- and 27th Infantry].

The Horse Soldier takes pleasure in honoring the Hoosier state by offering a selection of Indiana regimental histories some of the volumes are quite scarce. Check the What’s New page as we gradually list them on our web site.

Battle & Campaign Activities: 1862—Siege of New Madrid, Capture of Island No. 10, Mississippi River, Capture of Ft. Pillow. 1863--Expedition to Arkansas Post, and Yazoo Pass. 1863—Battle of Fort Gibson, Siege of Vicksburg, Siege of Jackson, MI, Bayou “Teche”. 1864—Red River Campaign, Battle of Sabine Crossroads. 1865—Posted in Lexington, KY, Expedition to Saltville, return to Lexington, moved to Louisville, KY, mustered out there, September 4th, 1865. Solid Hoosier regiment that participated in many small engagements that seldom given the attention they deserve.  [jp]
