This volume was written by Lemuel Abijah Abbott who served as a Captain in the 10th Vermont Volunteer Infantry.
The hardbound volume meas. approx. 6.00 x 8.50 inches with blue cloth covers with a black spine and corners. Front cover has “TENTH VERMONT INFANTRY” and a 6th Corps badge embossed in gold. Spine has title embossed in gold and back cover has a 3rd Corps badge also done in gold. Spine has some cracks and chipping along cover creases and is chipped at top edge.
Volume runs 296 pages with an index. Interior is clean and readable. Inside front cover has a bookplate that reads “COMPLIMENTS OF MAJ. L. A. ABBOTT, U.S.A.”
This is the diary kept during 1864 by this officer who was wounded Winchester in September of that year. Abbott enlisted in the 10th Vermont as a 1st Sergeant in 1862 and rose to be Captain. He stayed in the Army after the war retiring in 1885. A sample reading of Abbott’s diary for this write up revealed some wonderful insights into what he was seeing and feeling.
