Also a presentation inscription to “Surgeon to “Surgeon Edward S. Bogert, USN” from Tatnall’s surviving son: “Mr. John R.F. Tatnall through the US Naval Lyceum/ June 1881.” 255pp., plus appendix. In green blind-stamped glazed cloth, 9.5 x 6.25”, w/gilt spine lettering. Exhibits light wear at the extremities, else near fine.

Commodore Tatnall is remembered as the commander of the Confederate Merrimac in its engagement with the Union Monitor. After scuttling the Merrimac, Tatnall spent the remainder of the war attacking the Union blockading fleet off Savannah, GA. Front fly sports a tipped-in newspaper poem commemorating Tatnall’s exploits.

Superb CSA naval collectible. Extremely scarce in such fine condition. Nicely priced. [jp]
