Daniel P. Dewey was a 19 year old Trinity College student who enlisted as Corporal and mustered into Company “A”, 25th CT. Infantry, 11/11/1862. He was promoted to Sergeant 1/16/1863 and to 2nd LT., 3/3/1863. He was killed in action, shot through the head while leading his company in action at Irish Bend, LA. This volume contains a narrative of his enlistment and character testimonials by various members of his regiment. Also penciled notations in the lower margin by Lucien M. Rice—[“I slept with him on deck several night of the voyage [to Louisiana, “ etc.]
The 25th Connecticut a nine month regiment was mustered in November 1862, serving through August 1863 in the Dept. of the Gulf, principally in Louisiana. It participated in the “Teche Campaign” in which Lt. Dewey was killed, and the later successful Siege of Port Hudson. Mustered out 8/17/1863. During service the unit lost 29 men killed or mortally wounded and 65 by disease for a total of 94. Fine Connecticut regimental collectible. [jp]
