The 8th PA Cavalry mustered in October 1862, was sent to Washington and attached to the Army of the Potomac, with which it served through all the major campaigns and battles of that army through Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. During service the unit lost 60 men killed and mortally wounded and 128 by disease for a total of 188.

This book treats the famous charge of the 8th Pennsylvania cavalry at Chancellorsville, May 2, 1863. Riding to assist Gen. Howard’s 11th Corps against Stonewall Jackson’s attacking Confederates, the 8th PA , finding themselves surrounded, made a desperate charge which not only cut their way through, but had the extra beneficial effect of blunting the momentum of Jackson’s attack. Unfortunately, Union Cavalry commander Pleasonton jumped in to take credit for this improvised, do-or-die charge, reporting that he ordered it, and testifying to that effect before the Congressional Committee on the Conduct of the War. This book was written by 8th PA Colonel Pennock Huey for to clear the record concerning his regiment’s Chancellorsville cavalry charge. Specifically, he and a number of regimental mates were outraged by General Pleasanton’s lying attempt to take credit for it. An intriguing book for Chancellorsville buffs. Solid 8th PA Cavalry collectible. [jp]
