Exhibits slight wear at the extremities, w/hinges starting, but still solid. Else VG and handsome. Mustered in the autumn of 1862, the 144th NY was a two regiment that served in the Washington, DC defenses until June 1863, and was then transferred the south Atlantic theater, participating in operations from South Carolina to Florida, including Morris Island o and the assault on Fort Wagner. Mustered out in the autumn of 1864, 144th lost 39 killed and mortally wounded and 178 to disease for a total 217.   [jp]
