During the Civil War the state of Indiana provided 208, 367 soldiers and 2,130 sailors to the Union cause--of whom 24, 416 were killed and 48, 568 wounded in service. On the army side, the state contributed 129 Infantry units, 13 cavalry, 1 cavalry company, 1 regiment of Heavy Artillery and 26 light artillery batteries. Nearly all of these were posted to the western theatre, though some surfaced in east, with a half dozen present at the Battle of Gettysburg— [3rd Indiana Cavalry, 7th-14th-19th - 20th- and 27th Infantry].

By Regimental Association Committee. Published by Hollenbeck Press, Indianapolis, IN: 1899. 221 pp. Brown glazed cloth 9.25 x 6.25”, w/gilt cover lettering. Exhibits light wear at the extremities, else VG plus to near fine, w/tight spine & bright lettering.

The 79th Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at Indianapolis, IN, 9/2/1862. Initially assigned to the western Army of the Ohio, the unit was transferred to the Army of the Cumberland, with which it served through the end of the war. Battle and Campaign activities: 1862—Pursuit of Bragg, Battle of Perryville, Pursuit of Morgan. 1863—Pursuit of Morgan, Burnside’s Knoxville, TN, Campaign. 1864—Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, May to October, Pursuit of Hood, Battle of Franklin and Nashville. 1865—Posted to Huntsville, AL, Operations in East Tennessee. Mustered out in Nashville, 6/7/ 1865. During service the 79th Indiana lost 53 men killed and mortally wounded and 149 by disease for a total of 202.
