William Hervey Lamme Wallace was an Illinois attorney who had served in the Mexican and had been elected Colonel of the 11th Illinois at the beginning of the war. At the Battle of Fort Donelson his coolness under fire led to his promotion to Brigadier General. At the Battle of Shiloh he assumed command of General C.F. Smith’s division, which became nearly surrounded in the initial Confederate assault. Though many of his men managed to escape, General Wallace [not to be confused with General Lew Wallace, who was also present at Shiloh] was mortally wounded, and died, while being by his wife, at General Grant’s Headquarters in nearby Savannah, TN. General Grant considered W.H. L. Wallace to one of the Union’s ablest general. This “life and letters” volume make a fitting tribute to his memory. [jp]
