During the Civil War the state of Indiana provided 208, 367 soldiers and 2,130 sailors to the Union cause--of whom 24, 416 were killed and 48, 568 wounded in service. On the army side, the state contributed 129 Infantry units, 13 cavalry, 1 cavalry company, 1 regiment of Heavy Artillery and 26 light artillery batteries. Nearly all of these were posted to the western theatre, though some surfaced in east, with a half dozen present at the Battle of Gettysburg— [3rd Indiana Cavalry, 7th-14th-19th - 20th- and 27th Infantry].

The 36th Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered in at Richmond, IN, September 16, 1861. The regiment was initially assigned to the Army of the Ohio and then transferred to the Army of the Cumberland, with whom it served til the end of the war. Its Western battle itinerary included Shiloh, and Stone’s River in 1862, and Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain in 1863. In may 1864 the regiment joined in Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign through the capture of that city, and were sent with George Thomas’s forces in pursuit of Gen. John Bell Hood, engaging in the November 1864 Nashville, culminating in the Battles of Franklin and Nashville and the destruction of Hood’s Army of Tennessee. Posted to Huntsville, AL., the unit’s veteran volunteers were transferred to the 30th Indiana Infantry, with whom it served in New Orleans and Texas, eventually being mustered out in November 1865. During service the 36th Indiana lost 113 men killed and 132 men by disease. This narrative treats of regimental activities primarily through the fall of Atlanta.  [jp]
