During the Civil War the state of Indiana provided 208, 367 soldiers and 2,130 sailors to the Union cause--of whom 24, 416 were killed and 48, 568 wounded in service. On the army side, the state contributed 129 Infantry units, 13 cavalry, 1 cavalry company, 1 regiment of Heavy Artillery and 26 light artillery batteries. Nearly all of these were posted to the western theatre, though some surfaced in east, with a half dozen present at the Battle of Gettysburg— [3rd Indiana Cavalry, 7th-14th-19th - 20th- and 27th Infantry].

The Horse Soldier takes pleasure in honoring the Hoosier state by offering a selection of Indiana regimental histories some of the volumes are quite scarce. Check the What’s New page as we gradually list them on our web site.

The 81st Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at New Albany, IN, August 29, 1862. Initially attached to the Western Army of the Ohio the unit was transferred to the Army of the Cumberland with which it served to the end . Its battle and campaign activities included Perryville [Oct. ‘62], Stone’s River [Dec. ‘62/Jan ’63], Chickamauga [Sept. ‘63], Siege of Chattanooga, Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, and Thomas’s Nashville Campaign culminating in the battles [Franklin & Nashville] that smashed Hood’s Army of Tennessee for keeps. Posted at Huntsville, AL, through the close of the war, the regiment was mustered out at Nashville, June 13, 1865. During service it lost 70 men killed and mortally wounded and 172 by disease, for a total of 242.

William Atkins was a resident of New Albany who mustered in as a private in Co. “C”, 81st Indiana Infantry, 8/15/1862. Promoted to Sergeant at some point in his enlistment, Atkins was mustered out at Nashville, June 13, 1865.

Excellent regimental, and scarce. Sergeant Atkins invites further research.      [jp]
