During the Civil War the state of Indiana provided 208, 367 soldiers and 2,130 sailors to the Union cause--of whom 24, 416 were killed and 48, 568 wounded in service. On the army side, the state contributed 129 Infantry units, 13 cavalry, 1 cavalry company, 1 regiment of Heavy Artillery and 26 light artillery batteries. Nearly all of these were posted to the western theatre, though some surfaced in east, with a half dozen present at the Battle of Gettysburg— [3rd Indiana Cavalry, 7th-14th-19th - 20th- and 27th Infantry].

The Horse Soldier takes pleasure in honoring the Hoosier state by offering a selection of Indiana regimental histories, of which this is one; some of the volumes are quite scarce.

By Rev. J. E. Brant. Late Major and Lieutenant Colonel. Published by Craven & Bros. Printers & Binders, Bloomington, IN, 1902. 191 pp., ills., rosters. Burgundy glazed cloth, 8.25 x 6”, w/gilt cover & spine lettering. Exhibits slight wear at the extremities, faded cover & spine lettering.  Else VG plus, w/tight spine.

The Eighty Fifth Indiana was organized and mustered at Terre Haute, 9/2/1862. Initially assigned to the western  Army of the Ohio, the unit later transferred to the Department and Army of the Cumberland. Battles and Campaign activities: 1863—Regiment captured at Thompson Station, Spring Hill, TN, March 4-5—[exchanged 5 May]—re-organized in Indianapolis, posted to Nashville, guard duty Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. 1864—Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign,  March to the Sea and through the Carolinas, Battle of Bentonville, Johnston’s Surrender at Bennett House, Washington DC Grand Review, mustered out there, 6, 12, 1865. During service the 85th Indiana lost 42 men killed and mortally wounded and 193 by disease for a total of 235.
