By Brigadier General Richard W. Johnson, USA. Published by J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, 1886. 428 pp., ills. Front eps owner bookplate: “R.A. Weaver.” In brown glazed cloth, 9.25 x 6.5”, w/gilt spine lettering. Front forward eps torn. Exhibits light wear at the extremities, else VG.

Richard Johnson was an 1849 West Point graduate who served on western frontier w/both infantry and the 2nd Cavalry. Appointed a Brigadier of volunteers, he served as Brigade commander in the Army of the Ohio, and later achieved Division command in the Army of the Cumberland. Badly wounded at the Battle of New Hope Church, he later retired (1867) with service disabilities with the rank of Major General. Was later distinguished professor of military science at the Universities of Missouri and Minnesota. Solid soldier, solid reminiscence. Good Union commander collectible.  [jp]
