Friedrich II of Prussia was the key English ally during the European Seven Years War, 1756-63. Thomas Carlyle was the one of the premier historians of the 19th century, and one of the more controversial. He was the leading proponent of the “Great Man” theory of history, and Prussian Frederick the Great was one of his leading examples.
