This first edition was originally specially bound by the publisher with partial leather cover and marbled boards for DePeyster’s private distribution to his friends. Book has been rebound with the original leather spine applied to the new. The author was a cousin of Kearny’s and they were raised together by their grandfather. Published by Rice and Gage of New York. Features several engravings.
Philip Kearny (June 1, 1815 – September 1, 1862) was a United States Army officer, notable for his leadership in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. He was killed in action in the 1862 Battle of Chantilly. Kearny is credited with devising the first unit insignia patches used in the U.S. Army. General-in-Chief Winfield Scott called him "a perfect soldier" and "the bravest man I ever knew. This is a nice biography that lavishly praises Kearny and contains many excerpts from pertinent documents.
Measures 6” x 9 ½” x 1 ¾”. Text contains 516 pages. None torn or missing. Paper has yellowed with age. Shows signs of light water stain on lower right corner of entire book. [sl]
