Dark green cloth hardcover that meas. approx. 5.25 x 7.50 inches. Full title is “HISTORY OF THE EIGHTY-THIRD REGIMENT, INDIANA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY. FOR THREE YEARS WITH SHERMAN. COMPILED FROM THE REGIMENTAL AND COMPANY BOOKS, AND OTHER SOURCES, AS WELL AS FROM THE WRITER’S OWN OBSERVATIONS AND EXPERIENCE.” The author’s by-line reads “WRITTEN IN THE ‘FIELD’ AND IN THE ‘SHELTER-TENT” NEAR WASHINGTON, D.C. JUNE 3, 1865 BY J. GRECIAN OF COMPANY A.”

The covers show wear around the edges and spine. Front and back covers have a tooled linear decoration. Title embossed in gold on the spine. Light spots of discoloration scattered on both front and back.

Interior runs approx. 163 pages. Binding is good and the pages are clean with only light scattered foxing.

The author, Joseph Grecian, was from Pierceville, Indiana and served as a Private in Company A from August of 1862 through June 1865.

The 86th Indiana saw service at Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta and Jonesboro. The regiment lost 284 officers and men killed in action and died of wounds and disease.  [ad]
