Written by Donald L. Canney and published by The Naval Institute Press in 1993 these two volumes cover the “old steam Navy” of the United States from 1815 to 1885. As would be expected the set is mostly concerned with the Civil War.

Volume 1 is titled “FRIGATES, SLOOPS, AND GUNBOATS 1815-1885.” The volume meas. approx. 8.75 x 11.25 and runs 204 pages with index. Volume is hard cover with a dustjacket in excellent condition save for some sun fading on the spine. The eleven chapters are titled as follows:

1.)   From Harbor Batteries to Paddle-Wheel Frigates 1815-1840

2.)   Experiments in Construction and propulsion 1841-1846

3.)   Conservative Expansion 1847-1853

4.)   The Steam Frigates of 1854

Appendices include Construction and fate of Vessels and Dimensions, Horsepower and Armament of Vessels. Volume has approx. 177 illustrations.

Volume 2 is titled “The IRONCLADS.” This volume also meas. approx. 8.75 x 11.25 and runs 162 pages with index. Volume is hard cover with a dustjacket in excellent condition save for some sun fading on the spine. The eleven chapters are titled as follows:
