With nearly 100 high quality photos and official drawings, this detailed body of research is the first work of its kind that is specifically dedicated to identifying the numerous models of bridle bits issued to the American artilleryman and cavalry trooper. The authors have drawn directly upon period records and correspondence, including several heretofore unknown sources, in order to classify these bits with the proper model nomenclature and present them in the context of their chronological issue. In addition to providing data which will assist in the identification of these bits, this book also documents the combined efforts of the cavalry boards, the Ordnance and Quartermaster Departments, and the officers and enlisted men in the field, to develop an effective means of controlling their mounts. These military bits that survive in collections continue to serve as a durable link between the trooper and his horse, and now, the modern collector. The key reference on the subject.

By McPheeters & Dorsey. Published in 1999, 7” x 10”, 77 pages.  Out of print and highly sought after reference.  [jet]
