By C.C. Briant, Captain of Company K.  Published by W.M. Burford, Indianapolis, IN, 1891. Front eps contains attached newspaper bust-portrait clip of “The Late Col. Tripp. Founder of the town of Tripton, now North Vernon,” plus a gem postage-stamp size image of a young, unknown soldier wearing a kepi. 423 pp., ills., regimental roster.  In blue glazed cloth, 7.5 x 5.25”, w/gilt cover and spine lettering. Exhibits light wear at the extremities, else VG plus, in protective transel-wrap.

Mustered as a three months unit in May 1861, this regiment participated in the summer West Virginia campaign, before being reorganized as a three year unit at Madison, IN, September 161. Attached to the Army of the Ohio, and later the Army of the Cumberland, 14th Corps, this regiment served exclusively in the Western theater, participating in the Battle of Shiloh,  Siege of Corinth, and Battle of Stones River, before embarking with Sherman’s forces in the Atlanta Campaign, during which it was it was ordered to Chattanooga, and mustered out on the expiration of its term of service, Sept. 22, 1864. Veterans and recruits transferred to the 68th Indiana Infantry. During service the 6th Indiana lost, 125 killed and mortally wounded and 142 men by disease for a total of 267.

Colonel Hagerman Tripp enlisted and was mustered Captain of Co. “B”, 6th Indiana Infantry, 4/19/1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and to 5/17/1862, and promoted (but not mustered) as Colonel, 9/21/1863. Discharged on 5/5/1864.

A fine Indiana regimental dealing with war in the west. Solid collectible. Scarce  in VG plus condition.  [jp]
