Published by Ayres & Wade, Richmond. First edition, in wraps, 305 pp., w/yellow covers., 4.5 x 7.25.” Owner signature, in ink—“W[.A. Nicholson”—on upper front cover margins and in front endpapers. Tile page ink inscription “Hubbert/ S. F. Hubbert”, and again, following “By A Virginian,” the inscription “who is S. Frank Hubbert.” Exhibits wear. Cover is detached, while remaining colorful and attractive. Though fragile, the remaining page signatures are intact. Though the owner—W.A. Nicholson—seemed to believe that the author was an “S.F Hubbert”, he was dead wrong. The author was noted the noted writer John Esten Cooke, who also served on Jeb Stuart’s staff. And, his biography of Jackson, was the first to appear, written immediately Stonewall’s death.
