Item Code: 503-171

The full title of this volume is “LOYAL WEST VIRGINIA FROM 1861 TO 1865 WITH AN INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER ON THE STATUS OF VIRGINIA FOR THIRTY YEARS PRIOR TO THE WAR” It was authored by Theodore F. Lang, Major 6th W. VA. Cavalry and Brevet Colonel and was published in Baltimore in 1895.

Covers are blue cloth with gold embossed title on cover and spine. Cover is decorated with a gold embossed West Virginia Honorably Discharged Veteran’s medal. Covers show light to moderate edge wear.

Volume runs 382 pages with 32 black & white portraits and 3 maps. Binding is good but getting weak and tired. Front signature looks to be strained and missing a page. Interior is mostly clean with some page discoloration from age. Contents cover personal reminiscences of different phases of the war as well as war history of each of the state’s regiments and a list of officers in each.

Inside front cover has an old ink inscription that reads “MRS. WILLIAM T. LEMEN, SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. VA. RT 1 BOX 26 GIVEN TO HER BY MR. LEMEN, MY GRANDFATHER.”

A quick search shows that the grandfather mentioned in the inscription COULD BE William T. Lemen of Shepherdstown who served as 1st Sgt. in Company F of the 1st Virginia Cavalry, Confederate.  [ad]
