Organized at South Bend, IN, in August 1862, the 73^rd Indiana became attached to the Army of the Ohio and then to the Army of the Cumberland. It participated in the Battle of Perryville (KY), the Siege of Chattanooga, and in many battle of the Atlanta Campaign, including Kennesaw Mountain. It accompanied Sherman in the March to the Sea and the March through the Carolinas, and was present at Bennet House for the surrender of Johnston’s army. After the final Grand Review it was mustered out at Washington, June 9, 1865. During service the 73^rd lost 91 men killed or mortally wounded and 183by disease for a total of 274.
