This volume features forty-seven war- time poems or songs of the South, which include patriotic ballads and tributes to fallen soldiers and officers. Title page reads, “SOUTH SONGS: FROM THE LAYS OF LATER DAYS”. Songs were collected and edited by T.C. De Leon. Published in New York by Blelock & Co. in 1866. Dedication reads, “TO THE WOMEN OF RICHMOND, WHOSE NOBLE SACRIFICES AND UNTIRING EXERTIONS FOR THE SICK DURING THE WHOLE WAR, HAVE WRITTEN THEM IN LETTERS OF LOVE, VERITABLE SISTERS OF MERCY, THIS VOLUME IS INSCRIBED”.

Book is bound in faded brown cloth. Measures 4 ¼” by 7”. Text contains 153 pages. Cover shows moderate wear, especially on edges and corners. Binding tape is present on spine. Several pages are loose. One page near the back has a large tear. Previous owner’s name is inscribed in pencil inside of front cover and on first end paper (F. McCaffrey, Quinnimont, WV). Pages have yellowed with age. Top right corners of all pages are brown from water stain. Edge of pages shows gold gilt.  [sl]
