This is a tight copy of the US Ordnance Manual of 1862, published by Lippincott in Philadelphia. The volume provides detailed information on all aspects of ordnance for the army, from nomenclature and inspection procedures to the minute description, measurement and listing of artillery implements, gun carriages, cleaning and inspection of arms, proofing barrels and care of material in the field, repairs at arsenals, organization of limber chests and arms boxes, detailed descriptions of issue swords and the construction of infantry accouterments, and a whole lot more. There is much technical information with tables and mathematical formulas necessary for ordnance officers at the time, but the volume is also a wealth of information for the modern collector with details on everything from shovels to saddles and saber belts. It includes a full index and series of plates illustrating gun carriages, swords, artillery rounds, etc. etc.

The book is in excellent condition. The blue binding has the title blind stamped in gilt on the spine and shows just a few minor rubs on the cover and minor foxing inside. It would be an essential part of an officer’s library, helpful in understanding the “sinews of war,” and invaluable to the modern collector interested in equipment, ordnance, and gear.  [SR]
