The full title of this volume is “MEXICO, AZTEC, SPANISH AND REPUBLICAN: A HISTORICAL, GEOGRAPHICAL, POLITICAL, STATISTICAL, AND SOCIAL ACCOUNT OF THAT COUNTRY FROM THE PERIOD OF THE INVASION Y THE SPANIARDS TO THE PRESENT TIME: WITH A VIEW OF THE ANCIENT AZTEC EMPIRE AND CIVILIZATION; A HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE LATE WAR: AND NOTICES OF NEW MEXICO AND CALIFORNIA.” The work was written by Brantz Mayer, formerly Secretary of Legation to Mexico. The work is two volumes in one.

The exterior of the book meas. approx. 6.50 x 9.50 and is bound in red leather with a heavily tooled decoration. Front and back has a nice gold stamping of a Mexican eagle within an oak wreath while the spine has the title with a decoration of a floral motif with mounted figures and an Aztec pyramid also done in gold. Covers have moderate to heavy edge wear with lighter wear at center.

Interior has the first three pages loose but the rest is well bound. Volume one runs 433 pages while Volume two runs 399 pages. Page edges are done in gold gilt. There are several woodcut illustrations and preface don by Henry Clay. Pages have browned some with age and title page has slight tear otherwise the volume is in good condition.  [ad]
