LABELED BEST STOUT PORTER BLACK GLASS BOTTLE

$43.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 14-1522

A quart size capacity, three piece molded black glass bottle circa 1850-1860. This is a RARE surviving example that still retains most of its printed label of the original contents “BEST STOUT PORTER ROB----, (ROBERT?) BYASS. --- DON (LONDON).”  Located just below the main label, along the lower border is printed “------- OF NUMEROUS FORGERIES ---FUTURE WILL BE THE LABEL INSURED BY R.B. BYASS” There is no doubt that this bottle and its contents was imported directly from England into the U.S. during the mid-19th century.  Black glass bottles of this type and size are frequently recovered from Tavern and Military campsites during the Civil War period. Less the labels of course.

The condition of this specimen is excellent and is free of damages, such as chips & cracks. The bottle stands 10 ½” and measures 3 ½” in diameter across the base. The label is square and measures 2 ½” by 2 ½”.

This item would certainly be a welcomed addition to any advanced Bottle collection or a Civil War camp display.
