This three-piece staff type specimen exhibits the die variation with one of the horse’s heads that is turned away from the center and the left legs of both horses touch the border. The manufacture is attributed to the firm of STEEL & JOHNSON dating from 1850-1865. The reverse side reads: * HORSTMANN * N.Y. & PHILADa in depressed lettering between two rings of dots. The face of this example shows a slight “push” or dent to the center of the shield. The reverse has a straight shank with a slight nick or bend located on the edge of the ring that connects the front face to the rear section. A non-dug item.
