In the winter of 1861-1862 a drill competition was held in Fitz John Porter’s Division of the Army of the Potomac. The winners of the competition would receive chasseur style uniforms made and imported from France. The style of the uniform was decidedly French with the only indication of American use being the stars and stripes adorning the shields on the shako plates and the pewter buttons that bore a US spread-winged eagle with patriotic shield surrounded by stars. The winners of the competition were the 62nd Pennsylvania in the First Brigade, 18th Massachusetts in the 2nd Brigade and the 83rd Pennsylvania in the 3rd Brigade. Sometime later members of the Excelsior Brigade also received this uniform.

This cuff button is off of one of the above described uniforms.

Button is of one piece button cast in pewter with the shank on back. There is a maker’s mark in raised letters under the rim but due to surface dirt it is difficult to read.

The face is complete with no dings or chips and is clean with wonderful details to the eagle and stars.

A very nice example.
