Button depicts the eagle with "R" in the shield, intended for officers of riflemen units, who were skilled marksmen, eventually they evolved as modern sharpshooters.  Backmark:  "W. G. MINTZER / (dot) PHILD.. (star)" in depressed channel with stippled field. Circa 1860-1865.  Two-piece, convex button, coat size. Straight shank. Excellent condition.
