This is an excavated coat-sized button with a brass face that consists of a large raised star with a block letter “A” recessed into its center and the word “MISSISSIPPI” spelled out around the parameter edge. The brass face is free of dings and dents and has a beautiful chocolate brown patina. The remnants of the gilt wash remains within the recessed “A” and around the edges of the raised star and the letters spelling Mississippi. This gold “outline” causes the details of this button to stand out nicely. The button back and wire shank are made of brass, all of which is intact. There is a maker’s backmark in a recessed channel that reads, “HYDE & GOODRICH, N.O.” The place of recovery is not known. [jet]
