This is a non-dug, one-piece French Chasseur button made of white metal by Henry et Antione Cordier of Paris, France. Button depicts a central eagle, surrounded by 13 stars. The French produced uniforms of the "Chasseur" style and a quantity were presented to McClellan who issued them to regiments from 62nd and 83rd Pennsylvania, 18th Massachusetts, and 49th and 72nd New York. The uniforms featured these white metal buttons, and were issued along with large shako hat plates and riflemen buckles. Back mark reads "CORDIER FRERES / PARIS". Complete with integral cast shank. Remnants of gold paint or gilt on face and black paint on back. Very nice condition. [jet]
