Here is a seldom encountered Engineer’s medium-sized coat button. Manufactured by Scovills around 1849 solely for the tenth company of the famed 7th New York State Militia. The tenth company being the engineers of this elite unit. Face has typical engineer’s castle device on lined field with plain border. Two-piece brass button with perfect shank.  Backmark “SCOVILLS & CO. / WATERBURY” in stippled channel. Very good specimen.  References: Tice NY224; Alberts NY40.    [jet]
