Item Code: 696-57

Likely among the rarest of all American military issue pole weapons. Only one contract was issued by the US Ordnance Department for lances in December 1861 for a total of 1,001 lances, all issued to Rush’s Lancers. Only a handful are known to exist.

All completely original including 9 ½ foot untouched wooden pole in excellent condition. Retains almost all of the dark olive walnut paint just a few storage scratches. The 8 inch, three sided tapered steel blade mounted on the original round and relief turned 4 inch heavy brass haft. The top brass collar stamped with the letters “US” over large letter “P” for proof. Age brown steel tip with nice crisp edges, stamped “US” in fuller. Blade nice untouched patina with smooth surface. Below the brass collar inlaid steel side strap are affixed to the three circular mounting rings for attaching a Cavalry pennant or guidon. Bottom brass ferrule is 5 ½” long and deeply stamped “US”. Full details of contract can be found in American Polearms by Brown and in American Military Equipage by Todd, Vol. 1, pp. 182.

The 6th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry was raised during August and September 1861 from companies raised in the Philadelphia area by Richard H. Rush, who was appointed Colonel by Pennsylvania Governor Andrew Curtin.  The regiment was assigned to the Cavalry Division, Army of the Potomac, serving with the Army during the campaigns in 1862 and 1863 including Gettysburg, and the Valley Campaigns of 1864. In September of that year the regiment’s three year enlistment expired and the unit was re-organized with several other PA cavalry units.

A very rare polearm in untouched condition, seldom seen on today’s market. Ex-collection Norm Flayderman.

Extra Shipping Required.  We can also deliver to any of the militaria shows we attend.
