Item Code: M26294

This extremely rare item is in excellent museum quality condition and is one of the nicest pieces of Confederate headgear we have seen in quite some time. This cap is well made. The cloth is of a fine weave and the color of the material and piping has remained constant throughout the years making it a thing of beauty.

The base of the cap is constructed of a dark blue almost black wool cloth that meas. approx. 1.00 inch high. The rest of the cap body and the disc are made of blue wool, per Confederate Regulations for Infantry, that has acquired a grayish tint through 150 years. The cloth of both the lower band and the upper body are in superb condition. There is some very minor moth tracking and two or three scattered pin-holes and light surface dirt but that is all. The moth tracking shows as small spots of a lighter color than the rest of the cap. These blend in well and are confined mostly to the rear areas of the body.

Just above the dark blue band are five horizontal courses of gold bullion tape going entirely around the cap. This tape is perfectly anchored on each course all the way around with no loose sections. The front, rear and both sides of the cap have three vertical courses of gold bullion tape running from the top horizontal band to the base of the disc. The disc itself is outlined in a single course of gold bullion tape while the center of the disc has a quatrefoil made of two courses of the same.

Attached to the side of the cap are two script infantry “I” buttons similar to those manufactured by the English. These buttons anchor a very thin chinstrap made of bullion tape which meas. approx. 0.25 of an inch wide.

Attached to the cap is a black leather visor with a bound edge. The top surface of the leather has some light crazing while the underside is coated green.

The interior of the cap matches the exterior in condition. The sweat band is done with an ox-blood colored leather that exhibits moderate wear on the surface but is securely anchored all the way around. Behind the sweatband is a course of cardboard which gives stiffness to the caps base. The lining in the body is done in purple polished cotton with a drawstring top that gathers in the crown. The lining has one place in the right rear that exhibits some small holes from wear but this area is small. A close examination will reveal several areas where there is some sign of stress to the material but no holes. The bottom of the disc is lined with a gray satin that is in good condition.

This is truly one of the finest conditioned Confederate officer’s caps that we have seen.  [ad]
