Number “402”, dated “Richmond, Feb. 19, 1863.” The two page pre-printed form, in black and white, 8.25 x 13.25”….. Acknowledges the Confederate States’ indebtedness to Martha Clark, or assigns, to the sum of “Twelve Thousand One Hundred Dollars”, redeemable after the first day of January 1866, at an interest rate of 8 percent per annum. Signed by the Register of the Treasury. [The reverse contains a blank red-stamped form for persons to whom the certificate might be assigned.] The Certificate exhibits slight wrinkling and fold marks w two small interior chips. Else VG and entirely legible. [One can only hope that Martha Clark made her loan in Confederate money, not in gold]. Unique Confederate collectible.
