This is a brass political token featuring James Buchanan. It measures approximately 1” in diameter. The front features a central, raised bust profile of Buchanan. The text running around the perimeter reads, “15TH PRESIDENT, U.S.A. / 1857 1861 / JAMES BUCHANAN”. There are faint traces of gilt remaining around the raised letters. The back of the token reads, “OLD BUCK” and “OLD PUBLIC FUNCTIONARY” around the perimeter with “PRIVATE / IN WAR OF 1812 / CONGRESSMAN / UNITED STATES SENATOR / SECRETARY OF STATE / MINISTER TO ENGLAND / TRIED TO AVERT CIVIL / WAR BUT BELIEVED / IN STATES / RIGHTS” in center. Normal wear and scratches for age. Some verdigris on back. Interesting political token. [jet]
