The medal has a gilt finish and is pierced at the top for suspension from a pin or ribbon bar. The face shows a bust portrait of Hancock in uniform with his name around the perimeter. The reverse show the trefoil badge of the Second Army Corps, marked “2 AC” in its leaves, and surrounded by the motto: “A Superb Soldier * A Model President,* making clear it was designed for his 1880 Presidential run.
Hancock (1824-1886) graduated West Point, served in the army his entire life, earned the nickname “Hancock the Superb” on the battlefield in the Civil War and later tried his hand at politics, coming close to being a nominee for President several times, succeeding in 1880 as the Democratic candidate, only to be narrowly defeated by Republican James A. Garfield.
This is in excellent condition and would fit a political or Civil War collection, especially one focused on the hard-fighting Second Army Corps. [SR]
