Early war bond issued from the Confederate Capital at Richmond, Virginia. The bond is dated August 19, 1861 and is number 1640. The center design is of a woman seated with ships, factories and printing press behind her and anchor and “horn of plenty on the ground in front of her. The printer of this bond is Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond. At the bottom are 30 coupons. The first was redeemable January 1, 1865 and the last on July 1, 1879. Approx. 2,919 of these bonds were issued. Bond is in good condition except bottom edge is slightly rolled. All ink inscriptions are readable.
