Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 287-76

Dated June 2, 1864. 2pp., in ink, on lined paper, measuring 9.75 x 7.75”. Fold-marks exhibit extensive professional restoration, neatly done. Paper exhibits light soiling and staining. Else VG, with the inked text remaining bright and entirely legible.

The double column document lists 17 foods, and their prices, beginning with Pork [25cts], Corn Bread [15], Meal [1 qt., 15], Peanuts ½ pint [35], Irish potatoes [$1.00 per doz], with wool and rubber blankets at 10 to $20 ea., etc., etc. Prose note at bottom of list reads as follows: “For Thanksgiving dinner, 4 table spoonfuls of meal mixed with Water & Baker in a Canteen./ 4th July Dinner Nothing to Eat. (The above list was given to me by Sergt. J.B. Gallison, Co. C, 40th Mass, Laurence PP.”) Right margin notation: “Federal Currency”. Reverse notation: “List of prices in Restaurant / Andersonville.”

As the piece is unsigned, its recipient is unknown. The soldier cited as providing the list, however, was Union POW John B. Gallison. A twenty-two year old native of Lawrence, Mass, and a shoe cutter by trade, Gallison had enlisted as a private into Co. “C”, 40th Mass. Infy on 9/1/1862. Promoted later to sergeant, he was wounded and captured at Drewry’s Bluff, 5/16/1864. Paroled 12/15/1865, Gallison died from the effects of his imprisonment at Lawrence, MA, 1/6/ 1865.

Poignant document from Andersonville, citing a gallant Massachusetts sergeant who left there barely alive…but not for long. Unique, superb collectible.
